Gryphon Sixth Formers celebrate fantastic results!
Students at The Gryphon Sixth Form in Sherborne are celebrating after receiving fantastic results this year. The proportion of students achieving A*-B actually increased compared to last year when students received Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs), which is impressive and demonstrates how successful they have been.
Headteacher Nicki Edwards said “We are incredibly proud of all our students today. This year group has never sat formal examinations before, having had their GCSE year disrupted by the start of the pandemic, so to see them succeed despite the challenges of the last three years is brilliant”.
Head of Sixth Form, Paul O’Donnell added “We are delighted with the A level and BTEC results of our Sixth Form students this year. Despite the disruption and adaptation to their education in Year 12 they have performed outstandingly. Their hard work and commitment over the two years has been rewarded with a set of fantastic results that reflect their intellect and endeavour. Every single student should be proud of their efforts, as should their teachers and tutors who have supported them over this time”.
Students saw success across the wide range of subjects offered at The Gryphon, with an impressive 37% of 3D design students achieving an A*, resulting in four students going on to university to study Architecture, a testament to the school’s growing 3D Art department. Cameron Hancock achieved 3 A grades and said he was ‘very pleased with his results’. He is now heading to the University of Bath to study Architecture.
The Gryphon also three students heading to Oxbridge universities this year: Lucy Jones (4 A*) will be heading to Oxford to study Classics and Spanish, Bella Whitmore also received 4 A* grades and is going on to study Law at Oxford, and Katie Copp (3 A*, A) is heading to Cambridge to study History with Russian.
Another highly competitive field is medicine, and this year The Gryphon has seen a number of students secure places. Molly McKenzie is heading to the University of Birmingham to study Medicine, Jessica Chiu will study Medicine at the University of Bristol, and Beth Linscott will pursue Medical Microbiology also at Bristol. Beth said ‘I’m shocked and happy, and very relieved the wait is over. I’m really excited about going to university”.
Students have secured university places to study a wide range of subjects. Esme Eaton (2 A*, A) said she was ‘pleasantly surprised with her grades’ and is now heading to the University of Birmingham to study music. Oliver Barrett (3A*, A) said his fantastic results ‘hadn’t sunk in, and are better than expected’. He will now study Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter. Sophie Garcia (2A*, A) said ‘I never thought I’d achieve this’ – she will now study Sports Science at Loughborough University. Aidan Hoggan (4 A*) said ‘the results are great, and better than expected. I wasn’t nervous until last night, but I’m now really happy’. He will now head to LSE to study Economics.
Other university courses chosen by Gryphon students include dentistry, journalism, pharmacy, motorsport engineering, zoology, chemistry with scientific computing, games design, and aerospace engineering.
Not all students choose to follow the university route, and this year has seen Gryphon students offered some brilliant apprenticeship opportunities including with the NHS, JP Morgan, and as a chef at The Newt in Somerset.
